Ray Jordan – Cellar Notes 24th June 21

With the countdown on to the release of The West Australian’s Top 100 red wines selling for less than $40, this week continues the theme of dam fine near misses.

The three wines are from different rice points in the tasting and demonstrate the incredible quality that is available for less than $40.

To put this in perspective, with 700 wines submitted, it meant that 600 missed out, many by a whisker.

The three featured this week were in the final mix until the very last minute and I just couldn’t let the opportunity pass without giving them honourable mentions.

They come from three different regions, showing the distinctive characters and styles that typify these famous regions.

There’s the elegance and silky-smooth characters of Coonawarra in the Parker, the opulence and fruit intensity of McLaren Vale in the Mitolo and the complete drinkability palate pleasing qualities of Margaret River in the Alchemists.

The West’s Top 100 will be published in a special lift out on Thursday 22 July. Readers will also have an opportunity to win 100 bottles from the tasting. It is a must read for any red wine lover looking for value for money and quality.

The wines

Parker Coonawarra Estate cabernet sauvignon 2018 ($24)

Parker Coonawarra Estate

A polished and well-presented cabernet from Coonawarra. A good vintage resulting in this medium bodied elegant expression. Lifted leafy fruit with a chalky tannin influence. It extends effortlessly to a long finish. 92/100

Mitolo Wines Angela shiraz 2018 ($39)

Mitolo Wines Angela shiraz 2018

A more concentrated and generous wine than the previous vintage. Polished, balanced and integrated with rich and lavish fruit balanced with fine silky tannins and plenty of chocolaty oak. Dry dusty finish. 92/100

The Alchemists cabernet merlot 2018 ($19)

The Alchemists Cabernet Merlot 2018

A bread-and-butter combo from Margaret River in this excellent vintage. It’s a soft and cuddly little wine with blackcurrant and spicy plums working together. A firm tannin thread keeps it honest to the finish. 90/100
